This is a writing excercise we did the other day:
Start by writing, 'He said:' then, without truly thinking about it, write what he said. Then go to the next line and write 'She said:' and write her response. Continue with this for five to ten minutes.
Here is my example from class:
He said: it is of no use
she said: why do you think that?
he said: Well, because it is true, isn't it?
she said: I believe anything is possible.
He said: I don't. There is only so much we can do.
She said: There is only so much, but I do not believe it is beyond our capabilities.
He said: we don't have the resources to gather such a crowd; how will they know? they've been scattered to the wind after the war, haven't they? they've been forced to live in the Underground. They wander, like nomads from place to place, hopeing to avoid the vigilant eyes of the Firebird. How can we stand a chance against that?
She said: There are things not apparent. Not even to you. The world is not yet dead to us. We will survive, we will reclaim what has been taken from us. We have fate on our side, we have the will of the Tiger and the strength of the people. We will prevail against this cloud that has descended upon our city. They will not take it, It is in our hearts, it is not a political boundry at all. wherever we go, we shall take it with us. Even if it is to the treacherous cold of the white mountains.
He said: You're not thinking. . .
She said: Yes. It is the only place he dares not travel.
He said: We will all be killed.
She said: Do you really believe that?
He said: Yes. We should surrender.
She said: Surrender? Alright, let's surrender then. We shall surrender, and he shall take us back as his slaves. And we shall live in slavery in the land of our mothers that was meant for us. You have forgotten.
He said: I have not forgotten. My philosophy is that we shall live to fight another day.
She said: Now is when we live. We fight now, or not at all.
He said:. . .
She said: you are making a mistake, joining him.
He said: Me? But I would never-
She said: It will happen. Thus is the burden of the one who sees.
He said: But I . . . No.
She said: You will join for the right reasons, at least. Whatever happens, I do not blame you. It is beyond your control.
He said: I would never- It can't be. . . you, woman. are mad. You are nothing but a blind hag, you can't see anything! You lie!
She said: I am bound by solomn oath to tell only truths. I can do no more. I only say what is to come, but I cannot tell you how to deal with it.
He said: I didn't ask to be told my future.
She said: No one asks.

This truly remarkable! Imagine the inspiration that could go into novel-making alone from excercises like this! I'll start one tomorrow, after I get some sleep for a change ;D. (Well, I just MIGHT sleep.)

Thanks! I like encouraging young minds to grow.
College is great! It way more fun than high school. There is a lot more reading, but a lot less everyday stupid busywork assignments. And, of course, writing! Nee hee hee! I think you're going to love college, Lion!

I think I'm doing the wrong course *lol* This creative writing thing sounds really interesting. I get a bit frustrated with the one I'm doing now - the problem is I'd probably have a better chance of getting a job/career in the multimedia business than in writing... still it'd be good as a side line. I love writing

Well, I don't exactly want to be a professional writer. What are the chances of that happening? Eh? (although, it would be nice. If I could become a famous writer or something, I'd want to write children's literature. Probably why I like Harry Potter so much. . .).I want to be an English professor. I chose english, because there are just so many other disciplines that get involved in writing. Language has it's fingers in many pies, you know? Creative writing is only one of my courses. I'm also taking, literary theory, poetry, Women in History, And a psychology course on person to person relationships. (this semester is one of the most interesting I've had. I'm really enjoying it.)

That sounds really interesting. I wouldn't mind getting into something like that actually. For some reason I find psychology quite fascinating as well. I wouldn't mind doing a course in that...

Maybe I should try doing something like that. It might help people get their minds working.

I dunno, thought I'd try at least He said: It's not working anymore. She said: What do you mean? He said: I can't.. I can't do this anymore. She said: So you're just giving up? You're not even going to try? He said: What's the point? It's over. She said: Sure, run away, like you always do. He said: I'm not running away. She said: Yes you are. You're a coward. When things get tough you get going. He said: I'm tired of fighting. She said: So you're going to roll over and give up? I know you're better than that. He said: ..Maybe you don't know me as well as you think you do. She said: What do you mean by that? He said: I'm sick of people depedning on me, I'm sick of having to be resopsible for so much. She said: Responsibility is a part of life, part of being an adult. You can't just brush this off, not with everything at stake. He said: But Why me? I didn't ask to be what I am. I didn't ask for any of this! She said: But thats the point, You are what you are for a reason. You can't change that. The least you can do is try..

It didn't suck! This is a great excersize for finding characters. What we did with our pieces afterwards was to take the dialogue and then fill in expository around it. This excersize isn't designed to be a finished product, it's just to get the creative juices flowing.

Well, it's not that good, but here's me attempt, not that long either,
HS: What do you mean it’s a good idea? I’ve never heard anything more preposterous in my life.
SS: But Charles, just give it more than a cursory thought. I bet if you did you’ll agree with me too.
HS: And why should I give it more thought? It’s absurd, there is no way Twinkies will outlast natural gas fueling.
SS: Think of it dear, with all the artificial preservatives in the Twinky, and it’s wrapping, it could very well last till the end of the century, and with current advances in motor technology, we could very well all be using hydro-powered vehicles before that Twinky expires.
HS: no, the Twinky is a bread product, and all bread products develop mold and bacteria. Especially because it has sugar enriched cream filling which is attractive to microorganisms.
SS: But dear, think of the life-span it has when wrapped in an air tight container. Now if it were a ding dong, wrapped in aluminum, I would have to agree, but it’s a Twinky and it’s in an airtight baggy that’s so difficult to open.
HS: it’s not airtight, the plastic is a porous material and air does get in and out, just at a slow rate, the oxygen allows for bacteria and mold growth, it is just not possible that a Twinky will outlast gas powered transportation.

ROFL... okay so I'm about four years too late in replying to this, - and I probably said something in the chat at the time- but LOL this is funny, Lassy. ============================= A little modification in this one... hehe
He said: Who am I?
They said: You know./You don't know?
He said: I thought I did, but now... I don't. I just don't.
They said: Lies./Perhaps you don't remember.
He said: Maybe I don't.
They said: Maybe you don't want to remember./ Maybe it isn't true.
He said: Yeah...
They said: .... / Does it matter?
He said: They want me to do all this stuff, but I'm only one person, you know? What can I do?
They said: All you can and that's all you can do. / The world will get by without you.
He said: Do you have to do that?
They said: Do what? / Hmm?
He said: Can't you talk one at a time? It's confusing.
They said: If the world spoke as plainly as I, separated their words as I do. It would be easy to tell truth from deceit. / If the world spoke as I, instead of plainly. It would be confusing. I understand. I'm sorry.
