The Serious Anomaly Detection, Investigation, and Control Unit (SADIC) of the Integrity Defense Agency is the Integrity Council's first-responder against significant or unusual threats to the internal security and stability of the Integrated Systems. SADIC operatives employ unconventional methods to resolve situations or discover information which would be beyond the capabilities of local police forces or regular IDA agents using standard procedures. While only a few of their operations have ever been reported in the media, they have earned the Unit a reputation as mercilessly effective agents of Integrity.
Because of their unusual and dynamic mission responsibilities, SADIC does not have a standard hiring process. Instead, promising candidates are recruited from the IDA, other IS agencies, or even the general public, and usually have the sponsorship of an Integrity councilor or other powerful figure within the IS political hierarchy.
Operatives have a diverse range of skills. While most have backgrounds as detectives or soldiers, SADIC also employs scientists, historians, and even poets. SADIC prefers to short-circuit emerging seditious mentalities within a population before IDA troops are needed for suppressive violence. To do that, they're just as willing to rely on subtle propaganda as on liquidating movement leaders.
In theory, SADIC's mandate only extends to maintaining the internal security of the Integrated Systems, and operations beyond IS space are outside their scope. The practical reality, however, is less well defined. IS space is enormous, and its borders are patchy, especially around the outer fringe. Individuals and ideas on independent worlds can easily influence the course of events within the IS.
Staying on top of such developments means that SADIC operatives are often deployed on foreign territory, sometimes with the understanding of independent governments, and sometimes covertly. On rare occasions, SADIC has also become an outright tool of Integrity's foreign policy, using their expertise to assassinate foreign officials or topple governments without the need for a costly deployment of the Integrated Systems Fleet.
