(the beginning of one of the first pieces of fanfic I ever wrote XD )
The Cardassian Public Transit System is one of the ‘man’made wonders of the universe. Using a little careful planning, you can cross the Gamma Quadrant in less than one day using only the public space shuttle system. Also you can be sure that when you are there (As long as you have the proper papers in order), you will be treated civilly by all other passengers and staff.
In other words, on Cardassia, the trains run on time.
Elim Garak sat waiting at the small eatery near the shuttle terminal watching the shuttles land.
He checked his wrist chronometer. She was late.
“I told her to take the shuttle,“ Elim thought impatiently, “But does she ever listen to me? No!” He took a sip of his coffee*, “She always has to do things her way. ‘My own ship works just fine, Elim. Don’t you worry, I’ll be here on time,’ She’s nearly fifteen minutes late. “She’s going to hear it.”
“Garak?” A voice said behind him.
“You’re-,” He swung around, “not her.”
He was expecting to see Selwen standing with a line of nervous looking Bajorans behind her. What he saw was a mother and her three children.
“Your not, Elim Garak, are you? Not the Elim Garak!?”
His knee-jerk reaction was to reply ‘who wants to know?’, but Garak just stared at the woman.
“Because, my sons just adore you. This is Brin,Tenar, and Nol. Oldest to youngest.”
“Did you really end the War?” Said the youngest.
“Stupid, He didn’t end the War,” Said the middle child, “He was a key player in the decisive battle, but it was Gul Macet that forced the Founders into surrender. Besides, it’s not like we won.” The mothers eyes flashed menacingly at her middle son.
The eldest said nothing, but he halfheartedly saluted in Cardassian fashion.
Garak had the strangest feeling that it was really the mother who was the fan and that the poor kids had to hear about the ‘brave deeds’ of Elim Garak relentlessly. He wondered with some amusement about how many of them she probably made up, seeing how he wasn’t exactly the George Washington of Cardassia.
*Coffee is only an aproximation. In actuality, it is a slightly addictive drink made from the seed of the shetak plant grown in equatorial regions of Cardassia, predominantly on the Marlin continent. Sometimes called Marlin for this reason. Unlike coffee it is drunk cold.
