Prologue Page- Basically frames the entire series with the phrase "Teachings that do not speak of pain have no meaning . . .because humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return."
Chapter One - The Two Alchemists
When rereading this volume, the first page struck me as odd. It's odd because it could easily have been left out, story wise. . .it appears to do nothing other than give the opportunity to hear Cornello's radio broadcast. With the limited amount of space in a serialized comic, I wondered why anyone would want to devote so much space to something so trivial. . . but then I wondered, is it really trivial?
Here is what the radio says: "Children of god who dwell on the earth, there is no salvation without prayer and faith. The sun god Leto will illuminate thy path. Behold! The Lord hath descended from his throne to save thee from all thy sins."
I think the first thing that gave me the idea that this may mean more than a sermon was the last line. Capitalise 'sins' and you get the set of homunculi in the story. So someone is going to save everyone from the Sins. Big surprise there :-P And who is most likely to do that? Ed and Al of course.
HOWEVER I had another thought, a guy named 'Father' made the Sins, who in turn orchestrated the Lior fiasco under Father's direction and probably created Letoism itself. So the Father character, most likely = Leto. . . so plug "guy who made the sins" into that sermon and it paints an interesting picture, particularly if you take into account Leto's likeness to Father. Speaking of likenessess, did I mention Father also looks an awful lot like Hohenheim. So plug Hohenheim in that sermon and you get an even more interesting picture. Put these things together and you could get something like this:
Children of Hohenheim (Ed and Al), there is no returning back to normal without prayer and faith (work and hope?) Your father (*cough* called in the anime Hohenheim of Light. . . light. . .illuminate. . . *cough* *cough*. . . ) will be key to discovering something important about your path. He has come back to protect you from the Sins.
Interesting note on the line, "leto has descended from his throne..." Father always seems to be sitting in (or rather, is attached to) a thronelike contraption, which he does leave at one point (and who do we meet in the next chapter but Hohenheim?)
This idea causes me to think of the sigil on the Philosopher's Stone room wall in Lab 5 later on, which had two circles with said on it in a sort of pidgeon latin something like : "The Ancestral Father is the Creator." and "Son, Redeemer and Mediator." We also see this sigil tacked to the wall in one of Ed's early memories of Hohenheim.
This is all very farfetched, I know, but it's fun to ponder anyway : P
Hehee... And don't worry, I won't be spending this much time on every page. . . hehehe. . .
