* draco still does the diary thing, but Eustace talks to him and convinces him through the use of the pensieve that serving LV isn't what he wants to do . . . but by then the diary is repaired and tom's on his way to becoming corporeal again.
When snape and raven have their discussion about DD's death, snape can call Snape's worst fear as evidence he really didn't want to kill DD.

Had an idea on the Snape-Potter-Prince discrepency. . . we can say the snape's mother's maiden name is Prince, who then married a man named Snape (Muggle, which makes snape's name change a bit ironic in that he'd rather be called a half-blood than be associated with the full blooded potters ), who died for some reason or another, she then married Henry Potter, had snape, and then died, perhaps her potions book is one of the only things snape has of hers, or something. ..

This came to me while I was washing the dishes one night, then Mlle and I started discussing it.
Make Snape adopted by the Potters, like from a fairly early age. Their parents were friends or something, and when his parents (Tobias and Eileen) died, he went to James's family. Which, as Mlle pointed out, Snape would love, because then he's not really a Potter.
However, maybe they didn't tell him, and he found out when Dumbledore came to arrange for him to go to Hogwarts. So at that point he blames the Potters for Uncle Marian and whatnot, and changes his name on the spot (because he doesn't want to be associated with people who would lie to him like that, expose him to vampiric relatives, etc.) because he has this rosy idea of his "real" mum and dad.
Then later finds out he's a half-blood and decides he hates his Muggle dad.

Eileen dies and leaves Severus to his closest living wizarding relatives Beatrix and Harold Potter
who have James as a son
Snapes father thought leaving him with wizard relatives was the best thing for him, since they had things he couldn't ever teach him, so he consented to him going off with relatives
