(well no one else has posted here yet, LOL! Strange as in, I never thought I would become a fan of the Star Trek world, LOL... well admittedly, it is mainly The Next Generation, but I wouldn't mind seeing The Original Series as well... Anyway... it always seems to be the same, the way I get into something - I latch onto a character In this case, it was Data from TNG, he just seemed like such a good character to me... and now I like the others as well, mainly Q - he's classic I pretty much went out on a huge limb, and actually bought seasons 1 and 7 of TNG on DVD (not exactly cheap, but oh well...). I'm going to start building up the collection as well, when I pay off all my debts, LOL. But anyways... if there are other fans here (which of course Mlle is, but others as well), how did you get into ST, and which series do you like the most, and why?

I am a big fan of Star Trek; TNG is also my favorite my series. I have watched several episodes of TOS (The Original Series) but I will always stay true to Next Generation. I have several favorite characters from TNG. The top two are Captain Picard and of course, Data. I also like Q, Deanna Troi, Lwaxanna Troi and B'Etor. Who is one of the Duras Klingon Sisters (the more ornery of the two). My favorite ST movies are ST II, VI, VIII & X BTW, if you want to meet other Star Trek Fans, you can go to the Forum for the Offical fan Club forums.decipher.com/index.phpThe site is ran by Decipher, so there are other fan clubs there as well.

Aaah, neat... Yeah, Data seems to be a firm favourite with the TNG fans I also liked Lore, though, go the evil guy, hehe! And B4 is kinda quirky Anyways... I ... made a message board a while ago if anyone wants to check it out, LOL... I know it's not the right place to post this but seeing as it's all ST related You can find the link in my sig, the "tngdata" one My b/f was telling me about one of the TOS movies... I think it's no. 5? The... oh man I forgot what it was called, LOL! It starts off with them camping or something and Kirk is teaching Spock about campfire songs? But anyway, yeah, it sounded pretty funny, so, I've gotta see that sometime I own Generations, First Contact, and Nemesis on DVD, they're all pretty good.I'm still yet to see Insurrection though.

The TOS movie you are thinking of is Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. They are camping in Yosemite National Park, attempting to teach Spok the purpose of having a good time, while he is trying to interperit the lyrics to Row, Row Your Boat. Which become relative later in the film. It is a good movie, based on theology and mythology. And we learn that Spok had a brother.
Insurrection is also a good movie and an important one. As I'm sure you've noticed that ST movies feed on past events. The same is true with Nemesis. The chain of events in Insurrection lead up to Riker and Troi *finally* tieing the knot in Nemesis.

Oh did they? Nifty! (guess who hasn't seen Nemesis yet? LOL)
Hmm...letsee....how did I get into Star Trek.... well, I suppose I've always watched the show (TNG) since I was a kid... but technically I didn't consider myself as part of any fandom.
But come high school time, my friends were talking about this new show, DS9 (along with such shows as Earth 2 and SeaQuest, and probably B5, although I can't recall any specific conversations about that)).. and naturally, not wanting to be left out of the conversation (and Odo sounding interesting to me) I started watching the show... I was hooked, although I still didn't consider myself a Trekkie (this is my usual pattern for me becoming obsessed with something, I swear it's just another show/book/movie/play/singer... and then, BAM! it sneaks up on me and I realize....they've got me LOL)
That same year, they were having a TOS marathon (UPN always seemed to have one around Thankesgiving) So I basically bombarded myself with TOS that weekend...finding Spock especially 'Fascinating' (LOL) At that point, I just HAD to admit that I really liked the ST franchise....LOL
(I had a similar experiance with HP, BTW)

Hehe... sorry about that Milly. I didn't mean to give away part of a movie you haven't seen. But to take that a little further... you better watch it girl! LOL. j/k But seriously, you should, it is a great film. Except for the end, which I refuse to give away.

Eeeesh yeah.... and I saw Nemesis before getting into TNG as well, go me, LOL! Oh well...... *sighs sadly* Yes, well done! So I know you've seen Generations, First Conact and Nemesis. Now you just need to catch up to the other 7 Star Trek movies. Well no, only 6 actually. If you haven't seen Star Trek: The Motion Picture, you haven't missed much. And nothing of any real consequence happens either. The idea behind the story is interesting, but the movie drags. So I will leave that one up to you.

Yes....LOL it's called going from having virtually no budget, to having a major motion picture budget.... Long story short....WAAAAyYY too many gratuitous shots of the Enterprise....... ;D My favorite is ST:IV (The Voyage Home) WOOT! Save the whales! My second fav is ST:III ....mainly because it has to do with my favorite character in TOS Even if it was a cop-out as far as ... errr... negating events in the previous movie......

It's about the characters for me, really. I'm not really a sci-fi fan. I love Red Dwarf, but for the comedy and characters, not any sci fi stuff. So it's the same with ST for me. Of course being a Buffy/Angel fan, I love those shows so much more, and I can find more to relate to with those characters, but that doesn't stop me from loving the ST:TNG characters I love wondering, "how would that character react to this particular situation"... it can be kinda funny sometimes, hehe...

I know what you mean. I'm kinda that way with Harry Potter. I really don't get into HP or fantasy that much (with a few exceptions), but the characters are interesting to me. But I've never read any of the books, I've only seen the first two movies, The Sorcerer's Stone and The Chamber of Secrets.

Good science fiction, like any story, is all about charaacter, not technology.... technology is just window dressing as far as I'm concerned ... but I'm wierd like that ....LOL....

LOL... well that's how I feel as well. My mind just doesn't comprehend a lot of technology. LOL I'll hear Data's explanation about something and think "WTF did you just say?" LOL! But in one episode in particular, I found the smaller plot of Data trying to train Spot more interesting than the actual main plot of the episode, hehe... Just because it was funny, and rather sweet... Spot is so cute I'm a crazy HP fan LOL I love the characters and the whole idea of magic.... That sort of relates back to my "Buffy" thing as well, because of magic and the supernatural themes... But what I love about characters with a lot of depth, is that there is at least one thing that you can relate in yourself, to them... even if it's tiny, there's still something there, and that's what makes these characters so likeable, even if some of them are slightly evil or twisted...

I agree, a well developed character, no matter what the genre, is someone that most people can relate to in some way, shape or form. Picard for instance - There isn't much I don't love about the man, right up to his bald head. But what I like *most* about him is his appreciation for the humanities and his presence. He has an ora about him that I respect and admire.

Captain Kirk on the other hand, while being another interesting character, was one I never really liked. Until I was able to appreciate his command capabilities, more than his personality. I don't care for Kirk as man, but he is a good captain. It took me a while to distinguish the two. But I learned to appreciate him more as a man in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Those two movies show a different side of Kirk that we usually don't get to see.

LOL I've seen too many parodies of Kirk to take him seriously But I'm sure if I saw more of TOS I'd get used to him, LOL... I actually watched The Voyage Home the other day, the one where they had to go back in time to bring whales to the future to save the earth. I actually quite liked it... The doctor and Scotty are pretty cool, and Chekov is funny as well "Nuclear Wessels" Spock was good as well, hehe...

Yes, Chekov is great in that one. I like The Voyage Home as well, it is one of the more enjoyable TOS Star Trek movies. I also like the underlining message in ST:IV... be careful who you kill off, they may save the planet one day.

Q is a good example Hehe! I love Deja Q, that episode is classic... Same here, Q is great. I have a Q Bear that I got at one of the conventions. I love how he is only one of two people (Lwaxanna Troi is the other) who can get Picard worked up.

LOL! Aaaw a Q Bear, hehe ;D I've got a little action figure of him, well it's my b/f's actually (he gave me a little Data one as well) It looks nothing like Q though, more like a bizarre cross between Graham Norton and James Marsters (Spike from "Buffy/Angel") LOL! I bought season 3 of TNG on Saturday, LOL! Well it was over $100 cheaper than it usually is, aiee... $107 instead of $223 So I had to get it I've got seasons 1, 3 and 7 now, LOL... not in any order really I sort of go for the ones that have my favourite episodes on them though, I got season 7 first because it has "Phantasms" on it, and that's pretty much the episode that got me into the show Then I got season 1 because of Encounter At Farpoint, Datalore, The Big Goodbye and Hide & Q... and I had to get season 3 because of Deja Q and The Offspring All the Data and Q related episodes, LOL!

For me (based on Favorite episodes) it would be 1, 4 & 7. Season 4 also had great episodes, including The Best of Both Worlds, whish is the one where Picard is assimilated and becomes Locutus. Then the Enterprise rescues him and gets their captain back. From Season 1 Encounter at Farpoint. And Season 7 The series finale w/ Data & Q ;D

Oh yeah I saw the first part of "Best of Both Worlds" on the season 3 DVD, LOL... now I have to get season 4 to see the rest Or I'll just hire it, that might be... cheaper LOL! I haven't watched a lot of my DVDs, which is a shame, I just haven't had the time to, unfortunately... and yet I have 3 seasons worth of the TV series and 3 of the TNG movies, LOL! But yeah, as I mentioned, the time thing, plus sometimes I just don't feel like watching some things, and would rather watch whatever's already on TV, or whatever. I need to be in the mood Hehe.... maybe I should start some new threads in this section, like for posting pics or polls and junk
